Can you believe this decade is approaching the end? I can’t remember much before 2016, but I remember it was simpler times. I reflect on the tunes that stopped me in my tracks that proves that music is still one of the best listening pleasures.
Chanel - Frank Ocean
The simplicity of “Chanel” illustrates that Frank’s artistry. Also, no one has flexed their sexuality quite like Mr. Ocean.
New Person, Same Old Mistakes - Tame Impala
One of the standout tracks from Tame Impala’s Currents is a hypnotic trance about the fears of personal transformation and self-reflection. The song is so dope even Rihanna had to cover the song for her 2016 album Anti.
We Found Love - Rihanna
“We Found Love” electrified the scene with the insane EDM build up along with Rihanna’s infectious voice. No wonder it was the biggest single of 2011, spending ten consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.
N****s In Paris - Jay Z and Kanye West
Two of the biggest hip-hop acts (at the time), Kanye West and Jay Z joined forces for the album Watch the Throne, and the songs did not disappoint. A fun antidote, the beat was composed by Hit-Boy, who initially wanted Pusha T to hop on the beat. However, T passed, calling it “sounds like a video game. Get that shit out of here.” That video game beat went on to sell 3 million copies for Jay and Kanye. “N****s in Paris” was the song that automatically got the entire room moving uncontrollably. 2011 was a moment.
Good Ass Intro - Chance the Rapper
With the soulful sounds that amplify Chance’s Christian upbringing with the juxtaposition of an album birth through his acid trips, Chance was in his bag with his mixtape Acid Rap and “Good Ass Intro.” With Chance's psychotic wordplay and flow proved that he graduated with honors from the Kanye West school and later influenced his Dean.
You can listen to the rest of the songs that I heart eye emoji in the last ten years.
