#JusticeForGlitter! After 17 Years, 'Glitter' Soundtrack is #1 on iTunes
“Glitter is back,” said Andy Cohen. “Did it ever go?”
The soundtrack of the ill-received 2001 movie, which is loosely based on the Elusive Festive Chanteuse, Mariah Carey’s rag to riches life story, Glitter has found its way back on iTunes top 10.
Two decades since the film’s release, the musical movie been considered a cult favorite but in 2001 it was widely criticized and a commercial failure, making just 5.3 million worldwide. The soundtrack held as Carey's lowest selling album to date. It would sell a mere 116,000 copies in its first week of release, landing at #7 on the Billboard 200. (It’s also noted its release was on September 11th)
It’s random, but why exactly is this happening? Today Mariah Carey is releasing her new studio album Caution, and her fans, also known as lambs shared posts of all her previous albums in anticipation of her new album. When they reached to the Glitter soundtrack, her fans purchased the album (probably due to the fact it’s not available on any streaming service), and it slowly began charting up the charts on iTunes. So much so, even Mariah was surprised by this sudden success. By Thursday, the album reached #1 and beat up A Star is Born soundtrack and Imagine Dragon’s new album.
Personally, Glitter is one of my favorite albums from Mariah Carey. Just like this slow burn, I too was late to the train, not realizing the beautiful craftiness of a concept album by Ms. Carey until I was in college rediscovering her albums and trying to beef up my album collections by illegally downloading music via LimeWire. The record gives us everything we love of Mariah, dramatic power ballads, fun songs that sample throwback songs to remind us of the 80’s and 70’s, heartfelt lyrics, etc.
If you’re not familiar with this record, here are some of my favorite tracks from the soundtrack
Never Too Far
Loverboy
Don’t Stop
Didn’t Mean To Turn You On
Lead the Way
